Description :

The Passion for Matthew (German : Matthäus-Passion or Matth4us Passion), BWV 244 is a piece by JS Bach for soloists, two choirs and two orchestras, created in 1727-1729. Full name: Passio Domini nostri Jesu Christi secundum Matthaeum. Libretto by J.F. Henrici (Pikander). The Passion, or Passion, is one of the most ambitious vocal works of Bach and consists of 78 musical numbers, including recitatives (including chanting of the Gospel), arias, chorales and choirs. The total duration of the sound is about 3 hours. A piece intended to be performed at a Lutheran service is more often performed today at concerts. Due to the dramatized plot and specific characters, the passionaries gravitate towards opera more than other choral works by Bach. The music of St. Matthew Passion belongs to the heights of the composer’s work.

The renowned St. Thomas Boys Choir of Leipzig, which boasts JS Bach as a former cantor, celebrates its 800th anniversary with an extraordinary interpretation of the St. Matthew Passion. The Guardian praised how the harmonic lines interwove with a transcendence that can only be achieved through living, eating and working together. This Accentus Music production is the only audio-visual release of Bachs St. Matthew Passion, performed by the choir for which it was written, in St. Thomas Church, Leipzig, where the composer worked and is buried.
