When Joni Mitchell took the stage Saturday afternoon, August 29th 1970, the Isle of Wight Festival had already seen its share of tumult. Fences were broken down while a radical movement were pushing to declare the venture a free festival. Joni, however, had only an acoustic guitar, a dulcimer, a piano., and her own singular voice. Maybe someday Joni Mitchell will become a jazz singer, but for now, in 1970, she makes pure folk, with a touch of Celtic motives, even though she herself is Canadian. The album is built on the memories of a modern-day Joni about the concert, inserted between the songs.
