ALBUM DESCRIPTION

 

The idea for the 6 Sonatas for Solo Violin Op. 27 came to Eugène Ysaÿe in 1923 after attending a recital by the Hungarian violinist Joseph Szigeti, then aged 30, in which he performed Bach′s Partitas and Sonatas. The Ysaÿe cycle was completed in July 1923, and published the following year. Its works draw on Bach′s legacy while building a bridge to new forms of composition at the dawn of the twentieth century, in an effort to reflect the technical and stylistic development of the violin over the previous two hundred years.
